Ode to Spectacles
Without my specs I can't see straight.
Then my mind becomes in such a state.
Without them I see nothing clear.
I feel discomfort and also fear.
Without my specs all things are blurred.
I see neither distances nor written word.
Without them I lose quality of life.
I feel so awkward and full of strife.
But with my specs sharp becomes my vision.
I can then enjoy books or my television.

I was out for an eye test when we met
We stood there, chastened, two old lags
It must have been quite thirty years
You couldn't see her eyes for bags
Straight off, I grasped her clammy hand
She blinked at me, looked even sadder
When out of guilt I blurted out:
