It is so hard to explain to some people that you sometimes prefer to be alone. This poem is a true snapshot of how that feels.

Suki, you're right - it can never be otherwise. Thanks.
David, you have detailed so many aspects of this and thanks for doing so. I suppose the first weapon would have been our bodies, limbs being extensions of harm. Interestingly an argument is often used for gun ownership in the US based on self defence, providing justification. The argument on nuclear defence still hangs over countries. If nonchalance is the viewing disposition , that seems a pointless exercise to me; I did find the programme confusing though and giving so many strands to draw together, really to no avail. I take your point however; in comparison with active soldiering, the mere watching of programmes must seem fairly impotent.
Thanks Beno, your point is a serious one and deserves its voice. May I say in defence that my poem was meant to align the masculine thrusting (of bullets) or penetration with the idea of domination, which is traditionally a male preserve. However, women can be aggressive in positions of power. which you rightly point out. I was using a poetic metaphor rather than making a political point. Thank you for troubling; I appreciate it.
I appreciate your likes, Laura and Rich, cheers!
Ray

This is a stunning poem, sad and brave.
I should imagine many would feel this but would be unable to express in such an eloquent way.

Cheers m'dears ?
Ray - seriously, this actually started out as a plan I'd had for years, about how to survive my dotage whilst living in abject poverty. I have no actual pension plan, no savings, no back up. I'll never pay my mortgage off. So - how to get drunk, eat well, and have a laugh in the meantime? This way ? And if I DO end up in the clink, it won't matter a jot. I won't be trying to get a job anymore, won't matter! Trick is to target a different supermarket each week - I won't end up on a Wanted poster that way.
Normality never liked me much tbh Leon, we were never bedmates to begin with ?

Hahaa - aye, like that's the worst you can think of, Jenny?!
It used to be a regular in my set but I dropped it for new stuff. Might bring it back in again. Without FAIL, after performing it, there would be someone shouting out or standing up...dressed in purple ?
Aye - that seriously chuffed me did that, about the course. Couldn't believe it. But then...of all the poems I've written...THAT one?! Be churlish to complain I suppose ?

This is an old one of mine, shamelessly resurrected upon the death of Jenny Joseph. It's also being taught on a degree course in a Liverpool uni - the lecturer turned up at a gig to tell me last year!! Something to do with intertextuality!

I think the masculine references do an injustice to the increasing role of women in front line politics and foreign policy. I don't think Condoleezza Rice has been too shy at distributing her phallic symbols.

How little do our parents really know us. We grow up with their ideology without question for a while, it's just like another story they read to us, then suddenly it changes.
Brilliant piece.

I cannot pretend to understand why any poet should feel
a sense of annoyance - to the extent of personal exclusion - about a poem that has earned them a place in public
affection. Too many with something worth that reward
never get to enjoy it.

Certainly stimulating in its view of life and our often
uncertain place in so-called society.
Lonely is a state of mind more than body...existing when one feels alienated from others. It is not the same as
solitary which extends into a preferred state of mind as
well as body. The trick is to understand and accept what
relates to one's own existence.
In the wider animal world there are species which live a
solitary existence, with no sign of seeking to do
otherwise. The human species can learn from that and use the lesson to its advantage through self-acceptance.
If we are not content in our own company we cannot hope to be content in the company of others.
To think otherwise is self-delusion and perhaps causes much of the misery in human relationships...especially in
formalised arrangements like marriage.
