I have many reservations about Jeremy Corbyn (particularly his anti-EU attitudes) but I respect most of his views and this venture. It's sad that Twitter seems to be the realm of the stupid.

Thank you, John. No, the playing field isn't level, but we should all be inspired by Michelle Obama's 'when they go low, we go high' approach.
Thanks for the likes, Manish, Kevin and Rudyard.

Shelley WAS pretentious. Some aristocratic guy living off the labour of others while he swanned around penning revolutionary doggerel.

Poor old Corbyn used a quote from Shelley's famous 'The Masque of Anarchy' to promote this anthology - the same poem he quoted at Glastonbury - and some folk on Twitter thought he'd written the lines himself. What's more, they thought the poem was rubbish - and said so. O, Shelley, you probably wouldn't want to be living at this hour ... https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/jun/28/twitter-rips-into-jeremy-corbyns-pretentious-poetry-except-its-actually-by-shelley

Thanks Stephen. Yes, I suppose I believe in the, "you fall off, you get back on," school of education.
When William says "I don't want to go to school!" I counter with, "Do you know what compulsory means?"

Thank you, Stephen! 'The wife' used that word as well, unsettling. She added, "a bit like your chilli con carne ..." Not sure what she means. π

Hi Clare, first of all, what a huge compliment! I can't possibly imagine how this could be a Top 3 poem, but I'll gladly take it. Thank you. I know what I had in mind when I wrote it but I tried to pull back and make it a bit more open to interpretation in the hope that the reader could bring something to it. Perhaps, for you, it worked?! π
Thank you also Stephen, really appreciate that.
Thanks also to Kevin, Michael and Leon for your likes and taking the time to stop and read.

John Donne
No man is an Iland, intire of itselfe; every man
is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine;
if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe
is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as
well as if a Manor of thy friends or of thine
owne were; any mans death diminishes me,j
because I am involved in Mankinde;
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.

In Memory Of My Mother
by Patrick Kavanagh
I do not think of you lying in the wet clay
Of a Monaghan graveyard; I see
You walking down a lane among the poplars
On your way to the station, or happily
Going to second Mass on a summer Sunday -
You meet me and you say:
'Don't forget to see about the cattle - '
Among your earthiest words the angels stray.
And I think of you walking along a headland
Of green oats in June,
So full of repose, so rich with life -
And I see us meeting at the end of a town
On a fair day by accident, after
The bargains are all made and we can walk
Together through the shops and stalls and markets
Free in the oriental streets of thought.
O you are not lying in the wet clay,
For it is a harvest evening now and we
Are piling up the ricks against the moonlight
And you smile up at us - eternally.

John, I grew up in the care system - they didnβt give us bicycles, let alone teach us how to ride them! Everything I have learned came in later life. Wouldnβt change it for the world - it taught me a lot about how to appreciate everything that comes my way. πππ
