Many Thanks to Keith, Don, Bryan,Nigel and M.C. Newberry for reading and commenting. Also Do.Rothy for the like.

I thought that the idea of downsizing the Royals was already being discussed especially after Andrew, and that maybe they were going before they were pushed, however the media reports it to us that they were wanted.

They would have been good for keeping the family image up to date and giving multicultural representation, but I think they will end up becoming some sort of Common wealth ambassadors in the end.

Hands up - who remembers the novel "Faggots" published some decades ago and
depicting events in the US homosexual "underworld" of the time?
I take the view that this site is for creative writing above all. That
includes material that is worth reading and makes us think. I'd
rather have this to activate my mind than some of the stuff that
is presented under the guise of "poetry"...
so often a sorely abused term for what used
to be accepted terms of reference.

This guessed-at situation might be important to the individuals
concerned and to a global media always eager for a "story" but
it doesn't concern me or the continuance of the institution that the
present Queen has served so well for so long. Neither participant
has - or is likely to have - any real importance in the line of succession and their decision bears NO comparision to that
taken by King Edward V111 to choose another American woman
and abdicate his place on the Throne, thereby placing the responsibility on his vulnerable brother whose premature death
may well have been caused by that sibling dereliction of duty.
I wonder what
memories this present scenario has
brought back to a Queen who
experienced those traumatic events in her
own youth.

I feel sorry for Harry and Meghan. In fact for the whole Royal Family. They will never know the pleasure of actual work, or phoning aròund for tradesmen who don't turn up, or how to manage when their car is off the road, or childcare, or hospital waiting lists. Poor bastards.

You have way of saying a lot with just a few words Ruth. I like it.....

Just noticed the title and pic.... You've stuck a pin in my Comic now Ruth....

Where is an easy exit
Where is a creakless door
Where I can quickly slip away
And dance on foreign shore.

What's that? I still can't have my pocket money?...

Megan without pocket
Money to have fun?
What a bit of rotten luck
Rotten luck ho hum

What's that Harry? You too?.....

Some people have all the rotten luck...

Ruth,

Who on earth are you referring to? I'll try and guess. With freedom comes responsibility. The Queen exemplifies this. The two your poem refers to have let themselves down, their families and all those well wishers who cheered so loudly at their marriage. Life is not about getting on one's bike and cycling off into the blue, it has more to do with mutual respect, earning a living and paying one's bills and being faithful to those who have placed their trust in you. As someone once said, "it will all end in tears".

An emotive subject which is very topical and I am sure your poem will reflect this.
Thank you
Keith

Ray...within a few years my grammar school went from top school in the borough to near the bottom as political dogma converted it to a comprehensive, with intake from its local catchment area. Not housing yet as far as I know, though I expect the 2nd year boys have done their best to raze it to the ground. Can't really complain as it made me the educated man wot I is today.

Hi Cynthia, it was very nice to read your comment about my profile. I have been off the site lately, but you teased me out again. EFIT is the method of getting likenesses for crime identification shown to witnesses etc. which replaced PHOTOFIT consisting of lots of pieces of a face overlaid based on their description. I think that was an older method pre digital age. In my case I used it as an illustration of conforming to expectations . I hope that is a help!

I hope you're well.

Regards, Ray

Taking to the outdoors can provide eye-opening events that don't
cost a thing yet are beyond any attempt at valuation. I remember
occasions when walking across Scotland - coast to coast: one
when caught on an exposed hillside as a storm rolled in, bringing
with it primeval trepidation and a sense of sheer human vulnerability
in the face of an approaching uncaring force of nature. Descent
was quick as the air began to hum and crackle!

Fact-flavoured and funny - an irresistible combination.
I'm already in my dotage and can testify to some of the content.
But the pleasure of a solitary physical existence comes from not
having to suffer constant reminders from the company of others
who visibly display the signs and symptoms you can ignore in
yourself ! ?
